Martin’s Spirit

8 years ago I moved to Brooklyn from LA with no job prospects lined up and a lot of hope for a dream.

Greenfield Clothiers- There are too many amazing tales and memories from this place to sum up here. I found a family of brothers who saw me, supported, protected, and continue to push me in this craft of tailoring. The garment world is tough here and globally…making it here with them meant the world to me.

Martin was never above us, he was on every floor of the factory with passion for the work and people. Every Friday – Charlie, Sadik, Denny, and Pasquale would order Chinese to treat us to lunch to celebrate surviving another week. We found out, except for Denny, that we were zodiac Dragons from different eras. Martin would join us when he could and even brought a 1989 bottle of wine to toast us. I remember him taking a ripper out of my hand and placing a blade as a tool of choice and having a sharp eye watching my stitches. I admire Martin who was a force with a bright smile. Rest with love ❤ 1928-2024

Lenni Lenape Land

Aaron Carapella’s immense Tribal Maps project was a beautiful relief to find all native people from North to South of the America’s connected on maps. To see the Pijao name as well as the Muisca, Sutagao, Emberá, Kogi, Arhaucos, and so many more all laid out has been a gift to give to family members. The effort to correctly name tribal members in North America without borders but with connecting river routes is now up on the wall at my tailor studio. It is fantastic for tribe members and relatives to share as well as for teachers to use as an educational tool and for lesson plans.

Maria Luisa Memoria

Maria Luisa, another beacon of the family, who made sure to introduce me to Adriana Villa Tejidos beautiful shop. In inspiration of Adriana who opened her own shop after studing with the tribes up north on indigenous practices where Maria Luisa was an ardent supporter and Pijao fashionista. Maria Luisa, who had invited to come back to celebrate the Folklore celebrations of Junio en Tolima con todo los caballos. Time goes so fast that did not catch it – but will now make the sure to celebrate your spirit by the next cycle. I remember your bright smile, warmth, navigation, and enthusiasm for all of us growing adults.
